The Crisis

Every day, we hear more about the crisis of education, but many do not realize the depth of this crisis. Here are some shocking facts: These statement are not opinions but are facts included in the 1993 U.S. Department of Education report, called "A Nation at Risk."

The national Commission on Excellence in Education comments, "Each generation of Americans has outstripped its parents in education, in literacy, and in economic attainment." Now, for the first time in the history of our country, the education skills of one generation will not even come near that of their parents. More and more people are living below the poverty line. It is no wonder that the family unit is also deteriorating and in great jeopardy.

Recently, the standards for achievement tests have been reduced to bring scores up to create a false sense of security. Average grades are going up while Standardized Test scores continue to decline. This "grade inflation" phenomenon rewards students more while they actually learn less. Parents are baffled when their A and B students can't make the grade on the tests.

There is perhaps no topic of more common concern for today's parents than that of the education of their children. Teachers as well as statistics support this concern--they are three times more likely to send their children to private school than other parents with comparable incomes.

The concerns are not just centered on the quality of education either. There are alarming environmental dangers too. Fifty years ago, the biggest concerns teachers expressed were talking out of turn, chewing gum, making noise, running in the halls, getting out of line and improper clothing. Today, our children have to contend with drugs, alcohol, pregnancy, suicide, rape, robbery and guns.

Simply stated, your children are at serious risk. The cookie-cutter, assembly line system of education in America too often disregards individual learning needs, causing our children to bury or lose their God-given talents and potential. Parent are collectively and rightly concerned about what their children are not being taught, as well as what they are being taught. We are frustrated that the system is holding back gifted children and drowning those with special needs. We are concerned for the physical and emotional safety of our children. Public education is not getting the job done, and people are desperately seeking alternatives while time is running out on their children.
