How the Hi-Q
Power-Glide
Language Course Is Different
Variety
Designed by Dr.
Robert W. Blair, the Hi-Q Power-glide Language Courses bring together a broad
spectrum of learning activities that will engage visual, kinesthetic and audio
learners. Unlike most programs, this program uses a variety of tools -
audiotapes, printed text, and multimedia software - all reinforcing each other
in the learning process. The instructional methods used in the Hi-Q Power-glide
courses come mainly from Dr. Blair's book, Innovative Approaches to Language
Teaching (Newbury).
Action
A game scenario
involves and motivates learners by putting them in the heart of the action.
You're a war correspondent, assigned to find a hidden treasure. Your success
will save the world; but in order to be successful, you must learn the language.
This game is woven throughout the course to make learning an exciting
experience.
Memory Aids
Hundreds
of "memory shoehorns" simplify pronunciation and aid recall.
Diglot Weavers
The
diglot weaver builds comprehension skills by telling stories beginning in English
but then gradually weaving in more and more of the target language.
No Boring Rote Memorization
Instead of forcing learners to "listen and repeat," Hi-Q Power-glide
courses make learning jun and exciting by tying foreign words to words you
already know.
Grammar Games
Includes exciting new approaches to learning grammar. Instead of memorizing
grammar rules, Dr. Blair uses pictographs to help learners generate their own
sentences emulating the natural language acquisition of a child.
Written Exercises
Innovative exercises teach the numeric system and the alphabet in far less time
than you ever thought possible.
What You Can Expect From
Hi-Q Power-Glide Language Courses
"Hi-Q Power-glide delivers
what it promises. With this course you won't be intimidated to teach a foreign
language. Every successful lesson learned will motivate you to move on to the
next one. People will wonder where your child "prepped." More
important than the snob appeal, using Power-glide will open doors for your
children that will carry into adulthood."
Kathy von Duyke,
Editor, KONOS Helps!
"[Power-glide] is miles beyond
the traditional text in creativity and interest level, and will be especially
useful for a student who does not do well with traditional texts. I suspect that
it will work best for students who are motivated to learn the language and will
put in the effort necessary to become fluent rather than just going through the
motions and completing the minimum requirements."
Cathy
Duffy, Author, Christian Home Educators' Curriculum Manual
"Unlike other higher-priced
courses, the approach does not contain repetitive drills, is not strictly
hearsay, and does not promise subliminal learning. It is fast- paced and takes
full concentration. The use of the full-sized textbook included with the tapes
makes it a more comprehensive course than others with twice the number of the
tapes."
Anne Brodbeck, Reviewer for Mary Pride's
Practical Homeschooling
"As one who designs
educational programs for individual students in our school, I must tell you how
impressed I have been with the Power-glide material. I was able to examine the
second year course material for our community college. Your course is more
comprehensive!"
Linda Rittner, Director, Pleasant Hill
Academy
The Power-Glide CD-ROM
Power-glide's interactive CD-ROM supplements the cassettes and book by adding interactivity and randomization to many of the program's most popular features. The CD offers three levels: easy, medium and hard; comes with an electronic dictionary and includes nine game-like tests. As a companion to the book and tape course, the CD-ROM enhances the overall effectiveness of the learning experience. Available for IBM compatible computers, running Windows (3.1 or later), the CD comes specially bundled with the full, six tape course.
The Teachers' Guide/Test Book
Each book includes both a Teachers' Guide, and twelve written tests, with answer keys, and a cassette tape to test listening comprehension.
The Guide
The
Teachers' Guide offers objectives for each lesson, suggestions for multi- level
teaching, games, language learning tips and quiz ideas. The Guide includes a
collection of Dr. Blair's essays on language learning which was recently
published by the Peace Corps.
The Tests
The tests are
designed to prepare students for high school and college credit exams. They not
only gauge students' progress but also work well to show accrediting boards what
students are learning.
